January 2014, looking forwards…also, Drawing the Line total funds raised.. is around £8,500.. fantastic!!

There are many exciting things planned for the first part of this year…. at the end of this month I will be going to the University of Leicester to speak at the Symposium Speaking Out which accompanies the eponymous exhibition; I will also be showing three works in watercolour from 2008, two of which were short-listed for the Jerwood Drawing Prize..

For most of this month I will be working in oils in a larger studio, thanks to Jesse and Henry: exciting and challenging.

In February I will be going to Austria, to the University of Innsbruck, to give two workshops on Animals and Art – with a focus on my work – at the Minding Animals International conference. I will also be teaching a workshop at Newlyn School of Art, on Drawing Methods and Materials.

In March my work and I will be going to York to the New Schoolhouse Gallery for my show which opens on March 8th. Later that month I will be teaching a workshop at St Ives School of Painting looking at how music and poetry can inspire us, with a focus on monoprints.

In April I will working in residence in York towards the end of the month, and giving a talk on my work at the New Schoolhouse Gallery.

New works, in Millennium winter show, and my new statement

I am putting these works in the Millennium show, opening December 13th, and I thought I would write some words to go with them. Here are my texts, and the images:

He carried me off, his lips on my hair.
He carried me off, his lips on my hair.

He carried me off, his lips on my hair –  Dec 13

This work suggests the desire to be carried away, to leave this world, through the gift of communion with Nature, or in this case, a deer. The human figure and the deer are both caught in a moment of suspension, they hover above the earth, in a space which is only just here. They inhabit a ‘thin place’, where different worlds gently intersect.
I touch my throat, the place where you enter.
I touch my throat, the place where you enter.
I touch my throat, the place where you enter
Sept 13
This piece emerged after about three years of working on it. The female figure has always been there, but the figure to her right, once a faun, then a man, and now a fully grown spirit deer, is descending from a higher region, perhaps we could call it Heaven. The deer is bringing to the woman, and in particular her throat centre, the gifts of ‘deerness’ such as speed, grace, beauty, silent movement and acute sensing.
My Dog keeps watch as I pray watercolour on gesso-prepared paper October 13 KW approx 40 x 30 cm
My Dog keeps watch as I pray.
This work also emerged over several years. The dog figure has been there from the beginning, inspired by a very fine dog who lived with me for 14 years, and who died last year. Initially there was a tiny girl figure floating, somhow attached to her chest, but I was never really satisfied with the image like this. Earlier this year I attended a Benedictine vespers service in Norcia, Italy. The monks, all dressed in white, bent at ninety degrees from their hips as they prayed and sang. The altar was full of light. It was dazzling.
When I came home I returned to this work and through the process of workng I suddenly knew that the figure with the dog (me) would be blending with her through the process of prayer. My arms emerge though my back, which is where the soul enters and leaves the body, according to some indigenous traditions.  The dog would be keeping watch over me, as my dog always did.
New Artist’s Statement:
I like to walk up mountains, and I love being on the tops where you can see huge hares and eagles, you can pass over valleys of bees and thin forests; there will be spiky shiny flowers with no stems growing, the backs of their faces pressed into the thin soil. These are fine but lonely places; no one goes there, much. You feel as if you can step into another world, and not come back. I love the feeling of balance, of being on the edge of something.
When I work I look for a narrow pass of edginess, of suspension; the feeling of being poised, teetering; only just here, existing in a thin place.
If I also ask for the vision of animals to help me, then I can be carried, or cooked by the heat of their cells, eaten or absorbed: emerge re-formed; wiser.

DRAWING THE LINE A SEALED BID CHARITY EXHIBITION IN AID OF ‘FREEDOM FROM TORTURE’

We request the pleasure of your company for the opening of ‘Drawing the Line’

On Saturday 30th November, from 7 – 9pm

Drawing the Line’ has been organised by artist Kate Walters in aid of the charity ‘Freedom from Torture’. It will include works by many artists who have donated, which will be uniquely available through silent sealed bids taken throughout the exhibition.

Supported by The Penwith Supporter’s Group branch of the national charity Freedom From Torture, the exhibition aims to raise funds and awareness for the charity and its work. ‘Freedom From Torture’ started in 1985 as the medical branch of Amnesty International. Since that time it has grown to a large organisation spanning 5 cities, and is almost entirely funded by donations. It offers vital support to survivors of torture from all over the world.

Lovely week teaching in St. Ives, about Dreams and Consciousness

I had a very busy week teaching in St. Ives at the School of Painting, teaching a course on Dreamscapes, Memory, and exploring – expanding- consciousness through the creative process. It was a lovely group of people from all over the country. We worked with drawing in a  number of ways: with the non-dominant hand, with closed eyes, with music, responding to the writings of Aboriginal peoples; to inner impulses, to dreams, and to personal memory. We made a shamanic walk together, focusing on walking, moving quietly along as one animal; some of us worked with the drum to find animal totems, whilst others worked with the monotype process to connect with the animal body.

I will be teaching a very similar course next July from the 8th – 11th at St. Ives School of Painting.

New monotypes made at Newlyn Art Gallery

Last week I was in residency, as part of Transitions 10, with Susan Bleakley at Newlyn Art Gallery. Alex Karrasch was also there collaborating with/supporting Sue . We were working with the theme ‘Being in the Desert’, or The Arena, looking at how we can be tested in all sorts of ways.

It was a week of challenges, looking within, but also of gifts; we had several lovely visitors offering great insights, and support, and I was given a box of very interesting books as well as a great picture of the crucified Christ, full of tenderness, acceptance, and love, from Chris through Simon Jacques. I was pleased with the series of monotypes I made.
